Makeup Artist – Todd Debreceni

If you’ve ever wondered who creates the realistic wounds in films like Captain Phillips or the fantacial creature effects in stage productions like Shrek the Musical, chances are you’ve seen the work of Todd Debreceni.

A working makeup effects artist and designer with over 40 years in the entertainment business, Debreceni began his career with PBS while still a graduate student in television production at the University of Tennessee. From those early days, he went on to work for industry giants including Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, and 20th Century-Fox Television, as well as cable pioneer Ted Turner at TBS in Atlanta .

The Industry “Bible” on Makeup Effects

Debreceni is perhaps best known for his book Special Makeup Effects for Stage and Screen: Making and Applying Prosthetics. Published by Routledge and Focal Press, the book has gained widespread acclaim as a comprehensive resource for makeup effects artists – so much so that it’s often called “The Bible” for makeup effects professionals .

Important Update: The book is now in its Fourth Edition, released in 2024. This new and expanded edition features updated information on lifecasting, prosthetics made using 3D printing, advanced airbrushing techniques, and new artist profiles . (Note: Some sources may still list the 2018 Third Edition, but Routledge confirms the Fourth Edition is the most current).

Debreceni has also written The Shop Monkey’s Guide to Running Foam Latex, a book that functions both as an information source and a practical logbook for artists working with foam latex .
