Makeup Artist – Stuart Bray

If you’ve ever watched a character get transformed by realistic wounds, aging makeup, or creature effects in a major Hollywood film, there’s a good chance Stuart Bray had a hand in creating it.

With a freelance career spanning more than three decades – since 1994 – Bray has worked on some of the biggest film and television franchises of the past few decades.

From Foam Technician to Hollywood Veteran

Bray’s journey into makeup effects began in an unusual place: as a foam technician on the film Mary Reilly, starring Julia Roberts . From those early days working with foam latex, he quickly moved up the ranks, and worked as a prosthetic makeup artist on an Alice in Wonderland production in the late 1990s before landing roles on major productions like Blade II and The Mummy Returns.

His film and television credits include:

  • Saving Private Ryan (1998)
  • The Mummy 1 & 2
  • Gladiator
  • Harry Potter series
  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)
  • Stardust (2007)
  • In Bruges (2008)
  • Doctor Who
  • Game of Thrones

More recently, Bray has worked on Doctor Strange and continued his contributions to the Game of Thrones prosthetics team.

Special Makeup Supervisor and Department Lead

Beyond crew work, Bray has held leadership roles on major productions. He served as the Special Makeup Supervisor for Doctor Who and as the Prosthetics Supervisor on the TV series Hex. These roles involved overseeing the design, fabrication, and application of prosthetic effects – ensuring continuity, quality, and safety across entire productions.

Teaching the Next Generation of FX Artists

Since 2010, Bray has dedicated significant time to education, sharing his expertise with aspiring makeup artists. He serves as a Prosthetics Tutor at The Iver Make-Up Academy (based at Pinewood Studios), where he teaches advanced prosthetic techniques.

Bray is also a guest lecturer at numerous makeup schools and colleges and runs his own workshops internationally. His teaching philosophy emphasizes understanding both the latest techniques in prosthetics and how to communicate them clearly to students.

The “Battles With Bits of Rubber” Podcast

Together with fellow makeup effects artist Todd Debreceni (author of the industry “bible” Special Makeup Effects for Stage and Screen), Bray co-hosts the podcast “Battles With Bits of Rubber”.

The podcast, which has been running since 2016 and has released 98 episodes as of May 2025, covers everything from rubber monsters and prosthetics to gore effects. Recent episodes have tackled topics like:

  • Digital tools in the workshop (3D modeling with CAD and ZBrush)
  • Teaching prosthetics at universities (including guest spots at Falmouth University with Neill Gorton)
  • Safety in prosthetic and special effects work
  • The intersection of practical effects and CGI
